Former Union Minister Kumari Selja has highlighted the complete breakdown of Haryana's waste management system, pointing to non-functional plants across the state. She specifically referenced the Bakrianwali village plant in Sirsa, established in 2006, which has become a mere dumping ground despite having composting machinery.
Concerns Over New Initiatives
The Congress leader questioned the BJP government's recent announcement about waste-to-energy plants in Gurugram and Faridabad, characterizing it as another empty promise. She emphasized that while the government makes new announcements, existing facilities are being neglected and are surrounded by growing garbage heaps.
Environmental and Safety Risks
Selja raised serious concerns about:
- Health issues in villages near waste facilities
- Agricultural land becoming infertile due to unprocessed waste
- Safety risks to air force operations in Ambala and Sirsa due to birds attracted to garbage dumps
- Increasing public protests and hunger strikes by affected residents
Government's Track Record
The senior Congress leader criticized both state and central BJP governments for their handling of waste management. She pointed out that despite previous promises of electricity generation from waste in Ambala, no progress has been made. The recent MoU between state and central governments for waste-to-energy projects was also questioned, given the state's dependence on other states for electricity needs.
