In a significant development for Haryana's political landscape, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has emerged as the preferred choice among Congress MLAs for the crucial position of Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.

The decision-making process gained momentum on Tuesday when three senior Congress observers - former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, AICC general secretary Ajay Maken, and Punjab Opposition Leader Partap Singh Bajwa - submitted their findings to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge after conducting individual meetings with state MLAs.

Sources within the party reveal that a significant majority of the 37 Congress MLAs have thrown their weight behind Hooda's leadership. Their support stems from his proven track record as a two-term chief minister and his demonstrated ability to keep the party unified. This backing was notably visible when 31 MLAs gathered at his son Deepender Hooda's Delhi residence recently.

"In these challenging times, when the BJP has secured a third term in Haryana, we need a seasoned leader who can effectively counter the government," a Congress MLA told Media, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Hooda's experience and political acumen make him the natural choice."

The party leadership, however, is proceeding cautiously, with Rahul Gandhi's input expected to play a crucial role in the final decision. The choice ahead isn't simple - while some argue for new leadership, others emphasize the risks of sidelining a veteran like Hooda, who holds significant political influence in the state.

"Dismissing Hooda isn't a straightforward option," a senior party functionary explained to Media. "His political leverage in Haryana politics is unmatched, and any decision needs to consider the broader implications for party unity."

The final announcement is expected soon, with sources indicating that even if Hooda isn't selected, the chosen leader might be someone from his camp to maintain party harmony and effectively counter the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government.
