Intricacies of Affiliation:
During the fourth global alumni meet at Panjab University, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the longstanding issue of affiliation for Haryana colleges. Affiliation has been a contentious matter between Punjab and Haryana, with discussions at a standstill despite multiple meetings.
Vice-President's Commitment:
Vice-President Dhankhar pledged personal efforts to secure funding for the university and expressed his intention to meet the Punjab Chief Minister to discuss the affiliation matter. He highlighted the historical connection, stating, "Haryana used to be a part of Punjab," emphasising the need for a consensual resolution.
Haryana's Offer and Punjab's Stance:
Haryana has offered to bear a significant portion of the university's annual expenses in exchange for affiliating colleges in specific districts. However, Punjab staunchly maintains its position that Panjab University is exclusively under its jurisdiction. Despite three meetings led by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, no consensus has been reached.
Global Alumni Network and University Ranking:
While acknowledging the distinguished positions held by PU alumni, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Chief Justices, Vice-President Dhankhar stressed the necessity of a robust alumni network. He urged the alumni to unite on a global platform, drawing parallels with Ivy League universities that thrive on strong alumni connections.
Call for Alumni Support:
Expressing concern over the fragmented state of PU's alumni network, Vice-President Dhankhar urged alumni to unite globally. He emphasized the pivotal role played by alumni in supporting universities and called for a similar commitment to elevate Panjab University's status.
Regret Over Foreign Donations:
Vice-President Dhankhar expressed disappointment over Indians contributing funds to foreign universities instead of supporting their own alma maters. This sentiment underscores the need for increased domestic support to ensure the growth and development of Indian educational institutions.
