Wrestling Federation of India Faces Restructuring Amid Controversie

1. New Leadership Sparks Controversy:

The Central Ministry of Sports recently dissolved the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) newly elected executive body, just days after Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brijbhushan, assumed the presidency. The move has ignited controversy within the wrestling community.

Sudesh Malik, mother of renowned wrestler Sakshi Malik, welcomed the restructuring, emphasising the need for individuals with integrity to lead the federation. She hinted that Sakshi might reconsider her decision to retire from wrestling following the controversial election results.

Prolific wrestler Bajrang Punia made a bold statement by placing his Padma Shri award outside the Prime Minister's residence in Delhi to protest against the WFI executive committee's election. He expressed concerns about the lack of transparency and called for a reevaluation of the decision.

Bajrang Punia stressed the importance of character and integrity in the federation's leadership, urging the government to appoint individuals who prioritise athletes' welfare over personal agendas. He left his Padma Shri award as a symbolic gesture, emphasising the need for change.

Sudesh Malik emphasised the necessity of female representation in the federation, particularly considering the achievements of women wrestlers. She suggested that the inclusion of 4-5 women in the executive committee would contribute to a more comprehensive and understanding approach.

Sudesh Malik revealed that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi had advised Sakshi Malik to reconsider her decision to retire from wrestling. This intervention aimed to provide moral support and reassurance to Sakshi during a time of uncertainty.

Geeta Phogat expressed disappointment with the Wrestling Federation of India's suspension, highlighting the potential impact on athletes. She called for a swift resolution, expressing hope that justice would prevail for the sake of Indian wrestlers.
