Olympic Wrestler Accuses Indian Olympic Chief of Fake Support, Revealing Cracks in Sports Management

Vinesh Phogat with PT Usha at Paris Hospital

In a shocking revelation that has sent ripples through the Indian sports community, star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has accused PT Usha, the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), of staging a publicity stunt during Phogat's stay in a Paris hospital. This allegation has brought to light the complex relationships between athletes and sports administrators in India.

Phogat, who was disqualified from her final match at the Paris Olympics due to being 100 grams overweight, claims that Usha's hospital visit was nothing more than a photo opportunity. "PT Usha ma'am came when I was in the hospital. She took a photo, but didn't say anything. I don't know what support I received. There was politics even there. There's politics everywhere," Phogat stated in a recent interview.

The wrestler's comments suggest that the visit, which was widely publicized on social media platforms with images of Usha standing by Phogat's hospital bed, was orchestrated purely for public consumption. "You clicked a photo without informing me and did all this just to show the world," Phogat added, her words tinged with disappointment.

The accusation comes at a time when Phogat has entered the political arena, having recently joined the Congress party and contesting from the Julana Assembly seat in Haryana. Her transition from sports to politics, along with fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia, has been a topic of much discussion, especially given their involvement in protests at Jantar Mantar earlier this year.

This latest controversy adds another layer to the ongoing debates about athlete welfare and the role of sports administrators in India. It highlights the need for transparent and supportive relationships between sports bodies and the athletes they represent.

As the story continues to unfold, The Haryana Story will keep a close eye on developments and their potential impact on both the sports and political landscapes of the state and the country.
