Family Rivalry Takes Center Stage in Rania
The upcoming Haryana Assembly election is set to witness a dramatic family face-off in the Rania constituency of Sirsa district. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has fielded Arjun Chautala, son of senior party leader Abhay Chautala and grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, as their candidate. This move pits Arjun against his granduncle and current Haryana Energy and Jails Minister, Ranjit Singh.
Ranjit Singh, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has already expressed his intention to contest from Rania, with or without the BJP's official backing. This family showdown adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape of Sirsa district, long considered a stronghold of the Chautala family.
INLD's Strategic Candidate Announcements
The INLD, in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has been proactive in declaring its candidates. With the release of their second list containing seven names, the INLD-BSP alliance has now announced a total of 14 candidates. This puts them ahead of other major parties, including the Congress and the BJP, who are yet to reveal their candidate lineups.
Notable candidates in the INLD's latest list include state president Rampal Majra contesting from Kalayat and Sher Singh Barshami from Ladwa. The party has also given a ticket to Sheela Rani, wife of the late INLD state chief Nafe Singh Rathi, to contest from Bahadurgarh.
Chautala Family's Political Influence
The electoral battle in Rania is more than just a local contest; it symbolizes the ongoing power dynamics within the influential Devi Lal clan. Sirsa district has long been associated with the Chautala family's political dominance, and any internal family clash naturally draws significant attention in Haryana's political circles.
Arjun Chautala, though a relative newcomer to electoral politics, is carrying forward his family's legacy. His previous attempt in the 2019 parliamentary elections from Kurukshetra resulted in a fifth-place finish. Now, with his candidacy in Rania, the young Chautala faces a formidable opponent in his granduncle, who won the seat as an Independent candidate in the last Assembly elections.
As the election draws nearer, all eyes will be on Rania to see how this family feud plays out at the ballot box and what implications it might have for the broader political landscape of Haryana.
