The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for a tough fight in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, as it aims to secure a third consecutive term in the state. The party has decided to move away from its ambitious "75 Paar" (Beyond 75 seats) slogan used in previous elections, opting instead for a more conservative "Third Term BJP Government" campaign.
BJP's Election Strategy
The party plans to kickstart its election campaign with a major rally in Thanesar, Kurukshetra. This event will see the presence of key figures such as Haryana BJP in-charge and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, co-in-charge Biplab Kumar Deb, and Chief Minister Nayab Saini. The BJP intends to organize similar rallies across all 90 assembly constituencies in Haryana.
Sandeep Azad, BJP's co-media in-charge, announced that the party will release a comprehensive schedule of its upcoming programs on August 2nd in Chandigarh. This schedule will detail the events planned for each assembly constituency.
Challenges Facing the BJP
1. Anti-Incumbency Sentiment: The BJP has been in power in Haryana since 2014, coinciding with the Modi government at the center. After a decade of rule, the party is facing significant anti-incumbency sentiment. The recent change in chief minister from Manohar Lal Khattar to Nayab Singh Saini has not yielded the expected political dividends, as evidenced by the party's performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
2. Caste Dynamics: One of the biggest challenges for the BJP is addressing the discontent among Jat and Scheduled Caste (SC) communities. In the Lok Sabha elections, both these communities largely voted against the BJP, resulting in the party's defeat in constituencies where these groups have a significant presence.
3. Farmer Protests and Agnipath Scheme: The state witnessed prolonged farmer protests against the central government's now-repealed farm laws. The confrontations between farmers and the Haryana police have left many in the farming community disgruntled with the state government. Additionally, the center's Agnipath military recruitment scheme has caused dissatisfaction among rural youth, who traditionally aspired for long-term military careers.
BJP's Performance in Recent Elections
The BJP's vote share in Haryana dropped by 11.06% in the recent Lok Sabha elections compared to 2019. The party won only 5 out of 10 Lok Sabha seats, a significant decrease from its clean sweep in 2019. In contrast, the Congress party saw a 15.31% increase in its vote share.
At the assembly level, the BJP led in only 42 out of 90 assembly segments, while the Congress-led alliance was ahead in 46 segments. This performance indicates a tough road ahead for the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections.
Despite these challenges, the BJP maintains a strong booth-level organization in Haryana. However, the party lost in 49% of the polling booths in the recent Lok Sabha elections, indicating that organizational strength alone may not be sufficient to overcome the current political headwinds.
As the BJP embarks on its campaign for a third term in Haryana, it will need to address these challenges head-on and present a compelling vision for the state's future to regain the confidence of the electorate.
