Haryana's political landscape is set for a significant change as Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced plans to make Gohana the state's 23rd district. Speaking at an event in Gohana on Saturday, Saini revealed that the BJP government is committed to elevating the area's status as soon as it meets the necessary requirements for district formation.

Gohana, currently a part of Sonipat district and bordering the national capital, has long been a topic of discussion for potential district status. The move, if finalized, would mark a major administrative restructuring in the state.

"We have formed a committee to oversee the formation of new districts," Saini explained. "There are specific norms that need to be met for an area to become a district. Once Gohana fulfills these criteria, our government will not hesitate to grant it district status."

A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, outlined some of the key requirements for district formation. These include a population exceeding four lakh, a land area of at least 80,000 hectares, more than 125 villages, and the presence of one to two sub-divisions and one to three tehsils. Additionally, the proposed district should be situated 25-40 kilometers away from existing district headquarters or neighboring districts.

The official noted that these norms are subject to change over time, highlighting the dynamic nature of administrative planning in the state. To spearhead this initiative, a committee has been established under the leadership of State Agriculture Minister Kanwar Pal Gurjar. Interestingly, Gurjar was also part of a previous committee that discussed the same issue back in 2020 under the former government.

Reflecting on past deliberations, Gurjar stated, "When we discussed this matter earlier, Gohana didn't meet all the necessary conditions. We will revisit the topic in our upcoming meetings, though we haven't set a date for the next discussion yet."

The announcement has sparked excitement among Gohana residents, who see district status as a pathway to increased development and better access to government services. However, some experts caution that the process of district formation can be complex and time-consuming.

As Haryana potentially prepares to welcome its 23rd district, the move underscores the state government's focus on decentralization and bringing administration closer to the people. The coming months will likely see intense scrutiny of Gohana's readiness to take on district status, with both supporters and skeptics closely watching the developments.

While the road to becoming a district may still have some hurdles, Chief Minister Saini's announcement has undoubtedly put Gohana on the map as a region to watch in Haryana's evolving administrative landscape.
