The Indian community in Australia is in shock after a young student from Haryana lost his life in a tragic way. Navjeet Sandhu, aged 22 and pursuing MTech, was fatally stabbed during a fight between some Indian students in Ormond, a suburb of Melbourne, on Saturday evening.

According to Navjeet's uncle Yashvir, the incident happened when Navjeet went with his friend, another Indian student, to collect the friend's belongings from a shared house due to a rent dispute. As the friend went inside, Navjeet heard shouting and saw some students fighting. When Navjeet tried to stop the fight, he was tragically stabbed in the chest with a knife.

The two accused, Abhijeet and Robin Gartan, are brothers from the same town of Karnal in Haryana as Navjeet. The Victoria Police, with help from New South Wales Police, quickly arrested the brothers in Goulburn on Tuesday, two days after the fatal stabbing.

Yashvir, who will retire from the Army in July, said the family is in deep shock. "Navjeet was a brilliant student and was to join his family in July for vacation," he said, highlighting the dreams that were cut short. The incident also shows the sacrifices made by Indian families for their children's education abroad. Yashvir revealed that Navjeet's father, a farmer, had sold one-and-a-half acres of their land to fund Navjeet's education in Australia, where he had been studying for one-and-a-half years on a student visa.

While the details of the fight and what led to the stabbing are still being investigated, the incident has caused worry among the Indian community about the safety of international students. Yashvir, speaking for the grieving family, has urged the Indian Government to help bring Navjeet's body back to India as soon as possible for final rites.

As the investigation continues and legal process begins, the tragic loss of a young life has deeply affected the Indian diaspora in Australia. The incident is a reminder of the need for better support systems and conflict resolution for international students in unfamiliar environments.
