Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday visited Madina village in Haryana’s Sonipat district to attend the wedding of a farmer’s daughter, continuing a connection he had formed with the family during an earlier visit to the village in 2023.

Rahul Gandhi reached the village around 10:10 am and spent nearly an hour with the family of farmer Sanjay Malik, whose daughter Tanu was getting married. The Congress leader blessed the bride and interacted with family members about local wedding traditions.

On his arrival, villagers welcomed him with a traditional white turban. Deepender Singh Hooda, the Member of Parliament from Rohtak, along with other Congress leaders, accompanied Gandhi during the visit.

The invitation for the wedding had been personally extended to Gandhi when Sanjay Malik and the village sarpanch travelled to Delhi on February 25.

During the ceremony, Rahul Gandhi tasted traditional Haryanvi sweets and also tried “dudh ka churma,” a local delicacy served at village celebrations. He also presented a gift and offered shagun to the bride.

The visit revived memories of Gandhi’s earlier trip to Madina village on July 8, 2023. During that visit, he had joined farmers in the fields while paddy sowing was underway. Rolling up his trousers, he stepped into the water-filled fields, participated in the sowing activity and even drove a tractor to plough the land. He spent more than two hours interacting with farmers and farm labourers, listening to their concerns about agriculture and rural livelihoods.

Following that interaction, Rahul Gandhi had invited farmer Sanjay Malik and several villagers to Delhi for lunch, strengthening the connection that later led to Wednesday’s wedding visit.
