A tragic drowning incident marred the ongoing International Gita Mahotsav celebrations when a woman died after being pulled from Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra on Thursday evening. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Shanti Devi, had come to participate in the religious festival.
Rescue Operation
The incident occurred on the eastern bank of Brahma Sarovar when people noticed a woman floating in the water and raised an alarm. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team stationed at the venue immediately initiated rescue operations. SDRF in-charge Rajesh Hudda explained his team was patrolling on a boat when they spotted something floating in the water. Upon investigation, they discovered a woman drowning. The team quickly pulled her out and rushed her via ambulance to LNJP Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Victim's Identity
Police identified the deceased through her Aadhaar card as Shanti Devi, originally from Begusarai, Bihar. She was currently living as a tenant in Dhurala village under Jhansa police station jurisdiction in Kurukshetra district. She had visited Brahma Sarovar to participate in the Gita Mahotsav celebrations.
Investigation Underway
Jhansa police station SHO Gulab Singh confirmed police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Authorities are searching for the victim's family members. "Further action will be taken based on statements from family members," Singh stated.
The incident raises questions about safety measures at the sacred water body during large religious gatherings. With thousands visiting Brahma Sarovar during Gita Mahotsav, the drowning highlights the need for enhanced vigilance and safety protocols at such crowded events.
