The final day of Haryana's monsoon assembly session erupted into chaos when Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's controversial couplet triggered fierce opposition protests. During his reply on an adjournment motion regarding the state's law and order situation, Saini recited: "Jiske Kirdar Par Shaitan Bhi Sharminda Hain, Woh Bhi Aaye Hain Naseehat Dene Humko" (The one whose character even the devil is ashamed of has also come to give us advice).
Congress MLAs immediately demanded clarification about whom the Chief Minister had referenced as 'shaitan,' storming the assembly well and raising vociferous slogans. The confrontation created pandemonium for nearly thirty minutes as treasury and opposition benches exchanged heated words.
Attempting damage control, Saini offered an unexpected explanation, stating "Col. Shaitan Singh was an officer who protected our borders," referencing the Param Veer Chakra recipient who died defending India during the 1962 China war. However, Congress members rejected this clarification as inadequate, insisting the objectionable word be withdrawn from records.
The situation intensified when Minister Krishan Bedi continued attacking Congress despite the Chief Minister attempting to speak, highlighting the charged atmosphere. Speaker Harvinder Kalyan struggled to restore order, eventually instructing both sides to avoid creating controversies over every issue while promising to examine the Congress demand for word withdrawal.
The session also marked wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat's maiden appearance as a Congress MLA during the monsoon session. The controversy underscores growing tensions between ruling BJP and opposition Congress in Haryana's political landscape.
