The family of a main witness in the castration case against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has got police protection back after receiving death threats from dera followers.
The witness is also a victim in this case where Ram Rahim and two doctors are accused of castrating dera followers. Based on his complaint, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered police to file a case against Ram Rahim. The witness now lives in America but gave his statement to the CBI court through video call. His questioning by defense lawyers is still pending.
His family lives in Tohana town in Fatehabad district. Through his lawyer Navkiran Singh, the witness told the CBI court that he had written letters on March 25 and April 8 asking for protection for his family. He said dera supporters were threatening to kill him and his family members.
The witness complained that police suddenly stopped protecting his family on May 24. After this, some dera followers threatened them, so his wife wrote letters on May 26 to the Fatehabad police chief, CBI, and High Court Chief Justice asking for help. She said unknown dera supporters were constantly threatening her and her three children on Ram Rahim's orders.
The CBI in New Delhi wrote to Haryana Police on June 6 asking them to give proper security with armed guards to the witness's wife. When the court ordered it on June 11, the CBI's Chandigarh office also wrote to Haryana Police again on July 14.
After CBI wrote twice, a police team was formed to check the situation. The team included Fatehabad police chief Siddhant Jain, CID officer Ajay Kumar from Hisar, Inspector Kuldeep Singh, and constable Satyavan from Fatehabad security section. This police committee studied the case and decided that the witness's wife was really facing "threat to her life." They said it couldn't be denied that something bad could happen to her. So they recommended giving her security protection.
The Fatehabad police chief then informed the CBI on July 24 that security had been provided to the family. Today, the CBI presented these letters from Haryana Police to the special court handling the case.
This case involves serious allegations that Ram Rahim forced his male followers to get castrated. The witness who complained about this is now living abroad for safety, but his family still faces danger in India. The restoration of security shows how witnesses in high-profile cases need protection from powerful accused persons and their supporters.
