Punjab's Move to Cut Haryana's Water Share Seem to Hamper BJP 's Growth in Punjab

AP Government's Decision to Reduce Water Supply Seen as Bid to Counter BJP's Growing Influence in Punjab Ahead of 2027 Assembly Polls

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann

A serious water-cum-political battle has erupted between the Chief Ministers of Haryana and Punjab over the water distribution between the states. BJP of Haryana is accusing AAP of involving politics in matters of water. Punjab's decision to cut Haryana's water supply by nearly 60% has sparked a major confrontation between the two neighboring states.

The move comes amid the BJP's efforts to expand its base in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. Haryana's BJP government suspects that Punjab's decision is a tactical move to checkmate their party's growing influence in the state. Punjab's water supply to Haryana has been reduced from 9,500 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs daily, citing inadequate water in its reservoirs.

Rajeev Jaitely, media adviser to Haryana CM, accused the AAP government of politicizing the issue to gain mileage. He claimed that the Bhagwant Mann government had no objection to releasing Haryana's quota till the AAP was in power in Delhi. Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini also pointed out that 500 cusecs from Haryana's quota was released to Delhi daily for drinking water needs.

The BJP has decided to pitch Saini, the OBC face of the party, to drum up support for the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, the AAP government is trying to rally the Punjab peasantry behind it by emerging as the savior of the state's waters.
