Balesh Dhankar, a man from Rewari, Haryana, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by a Sydney court after being convicted of drugging and raping five Australian women and filming the assaults. New revelations in the case have exposed his disturbing pattern of targeting Korean women using "date rape drugs."
The Predatory Method
According to reports, Dhankar would specifically target Korean women by placing advertisements in newspapers offering jobs as Korean-English translators. When women came for interviews, he would invite them to dinner and secretly mix date rape drugs into their wine.
The drug used was Rohypnol, commonly known as a "date rape drug." This is typically used as a sleeping pill, but when misused, it can cause amnesia, leaving victims with no memory of what happened to them. After drugging his victims, Dhankar would sexually assault them and record the crimes using a camera hidden in a watch.
Extensive Evidence and Conviction
During the investigation, Sydney police recovered 40 explicit videos from Dhankar's possession. In April 2023, a Sydney court found him guilty in 39 cases, including 13 counts of rape.
Justice Michael King, who presided over the case, described Dhankar as one of the most heinous rapists in Australia's history while handing down the 40-year prison sentence. According to Australian regulations, Dhankar may be eligible for parole after serving approximately 30 years. By the time he completes his sentence, he will be 83 years old.
Background of the Perpetrator
Dhankar had been living in Australia for several years and had established himself within the Indian community there. According to information from his Facebook account, he studied at the University of Technology Sydney and had built a reputation within the Indian-Australian community before his crimes were discovered.
The case has shocked both the Australian public and people in Dhankar's hometown of Rewari, Haryana, highlighting the devastating impact of predatory behavior and the use of date rape drugs to facilitate sexual assault.
