Haryana's Athgama Khap Makes Progressive Stand on Love Marriages

Historic decision requires parental consent for love marriages, while also addressing social issues like drug abuse and excessive wedding spending in Charkhi Dadri.

In a significant and progressive step, the Athgama Khap Ghosola executive committee held a meeting under the leadership of Chief Ranbir Singh at Balkara village's panchayat building, has decided to allow love marriages with parental consent. This is a significant shift from the traditional stance of Khap on love marriage.

Focus on Youth and Social Reform

The khap emephasised that Village level Committees will be formed in which youth participation is must. These committees will work on various issues of society like drug addiction and awareness against marriage within the same gotra (clan). Rajiv Ramnagar, Khap spokesperson outlined these initiatives which marks significant steps towards modernity. 

Tackling Social Issues

The khap has taken strong positions on several social matters, including:

  • Working through gram panchayats to ban liquor shops in villages  
  • Restricting DJ music at social functions 
  • Discouraging excessive spending at community feasts
  • Appealing to young women to avoid elopement
  • Maintaining social harmony in the community

The meeting was attended by key khap officials including Secretary Kartar Singh, Vice President Satbir Sharma, and others, demonstrating unified support for these progressive measures.
