Assassination Attempt on Sukhbir Singh Badal

Sukhbir Singh Badal, a senior leader of the Akali Dal party, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning. The incident highlights the ongoing security concerns faced by political leaders in Punjab.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am when Badal was performing 'tankhah' (religious service) alongside his former Cabinet colleague Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. Both leaders were seated on wheelchairs, engaged in their religious duties when Narain Singh Chaura, a known Khalistani militant, approached them.

In a split-second intervention, security personnel in plainclothes immediately recognized the threat and overpowered Chaura before he could cause any serious harm. Although Chaura managed to draw a pistol, the quick response ensured that the bullet was fired harmlessly into the open air.

The Arrested Militant's Background

Chaura is no ordinary criminal. Police records reveal he is wanted in approximately 30 different cases, including serious offenses under the Explosives Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His criminal history dates back to 1984 when he reportedly crossed into Pakistan and became involved in smuggling weapons during the initial phases of militancy.

Political Reactions and Security Concerns

Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema condemned the incident as a "major security lapse," demanding a comprehensive judicial inquiry. He questioned the police's delayed action, pointing out that Chaura had been roaming around the Golden Temple for two days prior to the assassination attempt.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar emphasized the efficiency of the Amritsar police, stating that the situation was brought under control promptly, preventing any potential tragedy.

Ongoing Investigations

Local authorities have since taken Chaura into custody. According to police sources, he is not just a recent offender but a long-standing wanted criminal with a history of authoring seditious literature and being involved in significant militant activities. The incident has reignited discussions about security protocols for political leaders and the continued presence of radical elements in the region.
