Haryana is set to revolutionize its electricity distribution system by implementing prepaid smart meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Central Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the groundbreaking initiative, which will fundamentally change how electricity is consumed and paid for in the state.
How Prepaid Electricity Meters Will Work
Similar to mobile recharge, consumers will need to purchase electricity vouchers or tokens before consumption. Once the units are exhausted, electricity supply will automatically disconnect. The system will provide 2-3 mobile alerts before complete disconnection, ensuring users have ample opportunity to recharge.
Technology and Monitoring
These smart meters will feature advanced technological capabilities:
- Mobile tower-based signal transmission
- Real-time monitoring from electricity company offices
- Elimination of manual meter reading
- Instant detection of tampering attempts
- On-screen display of current consumption and remaining balance
Benefits of Smart Meters:
- With smart meters, you can:
- Monitor your electricity consumption through a mobile application
- Recharge your meter in advance
- Control unnecessary electricity usage
- Smart Meters for Different Floors and Tenants:
- Install sub-meters for different floors and tenants
- Interface with the discom at the main meter point
- Recharge Alerts and Power Cut Indicators:
- Receive alert messages when your meter balance is low
- Distinguish between power cuts and recharge depletion through the meter's light indicator (light remains on during recharge depletion, but turns off during power cuts)
