Major Relief for Temporary Teachers
The Haryana government is taking a historic step to provide job security to 2,016 extension lecturers and 46 guest lecturers working in government colleges. The Haryana Extension Lecturers and Guest Lecturers (Security of Service) Bill, 2024, scheduled for introduction in the Assembly, will ensure these educators can continue teaching until they reach 58 years of age.
Addressing the Teaching Crisis
Currently, Haryana's 184 government colleges face a significant shortage of teaching staff. With only 3,348 regular assistant professors against 8,137 sanctioned posts, these colleges rely heavily on extension and guest lecturers to teach their two lakh students. The new bill comes as a solution to maintain educational standards while providing employment stability.
Financial Benefits and Eligibility
Under the new legislation, qualifying lecturers who have completed five years of service by August 15, 2024, will receive a monthly salary of Rs 57,700. This package includes dearness allowance adjustments twice a year, in January and July, matching government rates. The move particularly benefits teachers who have exceeded the age limit for regular recruitment but have contributed significantly to the state's education system.
Future of Higher Education
Higher Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda emphasized that this decision would benefit both teachers and students. With the implementation of the New Education Policy-2020 increasing workload, the government has also initiated recruitment for 2,424 teaching positions through the Haryana Public Service Commission to further strengthen the educational framework.
