Urban-Rural Voting Pattern Shows Clear Divide
The assembly elections in Haryana revealed a distinct contrast between urban and rural voting patterns. While rural districts like Palwal (73.25%), Yamunanagar (73.27%), and Mewat (72.83%) witnessed robust participation, urban centers notably lagged behind. Faridabad recorded the lowest turnout at 55.46%, followed by Gurugram at 57.73% and Panchkula at 58.70%. Even in Gurugram city, despite polling booths being set up within housing societies for voter convenience, the turnout reached only 51.50%.
Key Battlegrounds See Heavy Turnout
Constituencies featuring prominent candidates and close contests reported significant voter participation. Ladwa, where caretaker Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is contesting, saw 72% voting. The Uchana Kalan constituency, witnessing a clash of dynasties between Congress's Brijendra Singh and JJP's Dushyant Chautala, recorded 75.44% turnout. Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat's constituency Julana registered 69.80% participation.
Scattered Violence Mars Peaceful Polling
While the overall polling remained largely peaceful, several incidents of violence were reported across the state. In Nuh's Punhana area, clashes between supporters of Independent candidate Rahisha Khan and Congress candidate Mohd Ilyas resulted in five injuries and a police case against Congress workers. The Narnaund constituency, where BJP's Jat leader Capt Abhimanyu is contesting, witnessed scuffles between Congress and INLD activists.
Electoral Process and Party Confidence
The election saw 1,031 candidates competing across 90 Assembly constituencies, with 20,632 polling booths facilitating the voting process. Both major parties expressed confidence in victory, with BJP's CM Saini predicting a third term for his party while Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda claimed an overwhelming majority for his party. The electronic voting machines have been secured in strong rooms until the counting day on October 8.
